ALOE GUEST FARM
Type : Self-catering Accommodation Location : Albertinia District
An important grain centre with huge silos at the railhead. The substantial deposits of yellow orchre in the district provide South Africa's principal output. The clay is recovered by open cast methods and after processing the orchre is despatched to local and overseas markets for use as a pigment in the colouring of cement products, linoleum and paint. Albertinia is also the centre of aloe growing and there are two factories which extract and process the product for medicinal and cosmetic use.
Description : Aloe Guest Farm - The century old restored farmhouse, with its thick stone walls is a fine example of skill and enterprise of a time gone by. You are invited to make yourself at home here where the Vals and Gourits Rivers converge and when not in flood, then lazily makes its way to the sea. Come and be awed by the rock formation that has been formed by the west wind; like the pages of some mysterious giant book hiding the earths secrets. Come and see the island which time and again over the ages has withstood the relentless attack of the Gourits river. Come and appreciate the sunset and the kaleidoscope of colours over the rock formations. Come and enjoy the stillness of evening, broken only by the occasional cry of a fish eagle.
After a good nights rest it is time to explore your surroundings. There are a wide variety of bird species to be on the look out for; fish eagle, various species of heron and egret, darters also known as snake birds because of their low appearance in the water as well as Egyptian geese, kingfishers, loeries, partridge, sun-bird and many more. Various types of wild buck grace this beautiful area.
There are of course many activities to keep yourselves busy; angling, swimming in the river, canoeing, mountain bike riding. Clamber over the rocky terrain and you are bound to come across the many dassies here. When the river level is high enough you may even enjoy a ride on the river in a rubber duck. By pre arrangement you could even use your 4x4 bikes to ride the dunes behind the island!
At the end of the day relax on the stoep or under the lapa while you listen to the croaking of frogs and enjoy the view of the Gourits river and distant mountain tops; all the while your meat braais slowly on the hot coals of the built-in braai area and the kids splash around in the newly built pool.
