ANCHORS AWAY

Type : Self-catering Accommodation
Location : Witsand
At the mouth of the Breede River, Witsand is accessible from the roads that lead off the national road (N2) from Buffeljagsrivier and from four kilometers west of Heidelberg. Witsand, right at the mouth of the estuary overlooking the bay of St Sebastian, is a fine fishing area with wide, white beaches. On the estuary and up-river for a considerable distance conditions are ideal for power boats. Witsand is a popular holiday stay

Description : Anchors Away is a lovely self-contained holiday home. It is perched up on the hill above the river and has the most wonderful 180 degree views of the river, river mouth and out to sea.
The house is very popular because of its superb position, with stunning views and with very easy access for a boat. All our guests who have stayed there just love it and needless to say, so do we. The house is on the corner of Hitchcock Road which is the road leading down to the Government Jetty.

Accommodation : Anchors Away has three bedrooms and can accommodate seven people.
The house consists of 2 bedrooms and a small bunk room. Main bedroom upstairs has a queen-size bed and a single bed which has an en-suite bathroom with shower. The other bedroom has twin beds (which are normally made up as a king size bed - they can be split if requested) and has a bathroom with shower and bath. There is another small room with a double bunk and washing machine - which is fine for overflow of kids! There is a spare mattress which can be moved to where you want for another child and a futon in the braai area.
All bedding provided including electric blankets for the cold winter nights. Please bring a couple of spare towels - we seem to be a bit short sometimes if there is not enough drying time between change-overs.
Anchors Away has a large open plan lounge/dining room and kitchen which steps down into an open plan braai room. The lounge has a fireplace, TV with DSTV (please bring your own cards for more channels than TV 1,2,3 and e-TV ), DVD player and radio. Dart Board and many other games and puzzles are provided to keep you entertained. The kitchen is fully fitted with all you need including a dishwasher.

Directions on How to Get There
Take the National Road to Swellendam and on towards Heidelberg. Take the 2nd Witsand turn off which is about 5 km before Heidelberg on the right hand side of the road. It is the next turn off after the Slang River turn off. Follow the road all the way down to Witsand and you will come to a four way stop after passing the Sands Shop and Pizza Restaurant on the right hand side. At the stop turn left, pass the white gate posts of the Riviera and turn right at the next road. Hitchcock Road! Go all the way along the road, past the 3 storey white house until the road veers left (goes down to the Jetty). On the corner you will see our grey face brick house on your right, that's us!! 3 Hitchcock Road. There is no number or anything so you can just look out for the entrance to our house after the 3 storey block house/castle. At our entrance, you will be driving onto a lot of little stones which is the back garden!

Activities and Attractions :
There is an open green belt in front of the house with a path leading to the beach of the river.
Witsand/Port Beaufort is situated at the mouth of the Breede River. It is a three hour drive from Cape Town and an excellent halfway stop en route to Knysna and the Garden Route.
The fishing on the Breede River is recognised as the best in South Africa. Fish such as cob, spotted grunter and garrick are regularly caught in the estuary. A wide variety of water sports make this a popular weekend retreat and holiday destination. Take a drive to the De Hoop Nature Reserve or to the Malagas via the Pont which is the only hand-drawn pontoon in the country. Cruise up the Breede River. The area offers excellent bird watching and is an important breeding ground for the rare Blue Crane and the endangered African Black Oystercatcher.
In the winter months between May and November the bay becomes South Africa's "Whale nursery" when the Southern Right whales arrive to mate and calve. Official helicopter survey statistics has shown that up to 94 whales including 43 calves can be spotted in the bay on one day!
Hotel with restaurant and friendly fisherman's pub 5 minutes away. There is also a pizza restaurant and two small convenience stores which stock all you could need.
There are wonderful walks along the beach and the river.
Excellent Whale Watching, Bird Watching, Kite Surfing, Wind surfing, swimming, and fishing.
