Melkbosstrand takes its name from the the milky euphorbia which grow there. Fishing is excellent in the cold waters of the Atlantic. There is a free lobster-catching season in the summer months, with a limit of five lobsters per person per day. Every year on the day after New Years Day (tweede nuwejaar) Farmers arrive at the wide sandy beach to take part in the strenuous 'Boere Sports' - the tug-of-war being the principal contest. it was here in the cove called Losperds Bay that the British force landed to engage the Dutch in 1806.
