In 1715 the first settler, Ferdinand Appel, obtained permission from the Landdrost of Stellenbosch to start gardening at what was then called Swartberg (after the mountain behind the town). In 1813 the place was renamed in honour of the Earl of Caledon (governor from 1807 to 1811). The town lies 38 kilometres from the coast and is famous for the chalybeate baths and the wild flower reserve. The baths have been used since the days of the Dutch Esta India Company. At the fountainhead there are six thermal springs with a temperature of 50 degrees celcius, and one cold spring.
Description : This self-catering cottage is situated on an operational wheat and sheep farm and consists of two bedrooms, bathroom, a kitchenette and an indoor braai/fireplace. A big patio with an outdoor braai overlooking the mountains. Under floor heating in the rooms. Bathroom with bath and shower. Towels and Linen supplied.
Conveniently situated just about an hour from Cape Town between Caledon and Villiersdorp.
Accommodation: The cottage can accommodate four people in two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a double bed and the second bedroom has two single beds. The cottage is fully equipped.

A 50% non-refundable deposit is payable on confirmation of the reservation and the balance is payable on arrival.

Directions on How to Get There
From Cape Town, take the N2 (Cape Town-George) towards Caledon. Turn left at the R43 Villiersdorp turn-off. Eleven kilometers from the turn-off you will see Blue Gum Farm Cottage on your right.
Activities and Attractions :
Capture golden moments - July to September you can view the rolling green wheat fields.
Do not forget the yellow canola fields in September, a tourist and a photographer's dream.
Walking in the sunshine - Enjoy hiking in the fields, where you will always be come across indigenous flowers.
Rolling wheels - Bring your mountain bikes with you.
You may be lucky enough to spot a couple of Blue Cranes or small antelope.
Smell the flowers - According to botanists there are nearly a 100 fynbos species on the farm.
The extra mile - Picnic baskets and other services are available on prior
arrangement. On request you can also try to catch fresh water fish for the braai.
