De Mond Nature Reserve is situated on the estuary of the Heuningnes River. Rich in fynbos and birdlife which includes rare species such as the African Black Oystercatcher, the Damara Tern and the Giant Tern; the adjacent coast is also well-known to anglers for great fishing opportunities.
Description : de Mond Cottage is situated on a remote part of the farm Vogelgezang next to de Mond Nature reserve. It lies in a fynbos thicket and offers comfortable accommodation with views over cultivated lands and distant mountains. One can enjoy fantastic sunsets from an elevated rustic swimming pool and deck with views to the nearby coastline and de Mond Nature reserve.
De Mond, the mouth of the Heuningsnes River, lies between the villages of Arniston and Struisbaai and is only 2 hrs drive from Cape Town. The estuary is pristine and uniquely 'Southern Cape coast'. The fishing is well renowned. Grunter, steenbras, galjoen, leervis, elf, cob, springer and striped harder all occur in this estuary and along the coast. A nominal fee is charged to visit the Reserve.
Birding is awesome too. The Damaras of de Mond graciously share the estuary with émigrés, the Caspian terns, who have a breeding colony at the mouth. The African black oystercatcher is also an endangered species occurring at the estuary. Blue Cranes and flamingos are amongst the many birds to be seen in the vlei and fields on the farm.
Vogelgezang means 'bird song' after all.
The cottage is on the edge of the farms 600 hectares of coastal fynbos which offers great walks and mountain bike trails. The fynbos is especially amazing in the late winter but proteas flower throughout the winter months.
If you just feel like chilling for the week-end, you will find the cottage quite relaxed and comfortably furnished. The views of the farm lands, sea and sunset will calm your soul.
Vogelgezang is 19kms from Bredasdorp (shopping, restaurants and shipwreck museum) and 17kms from Arniston swimming beaches and cave etc. Cape Agulhas, Africans Southern most point is approximately 30 minutes away. Accommodation : The Thatched Cottage includes:
Self catering kitchen - fully equipped with gas fridge, stove, indoor wood burning Dover stove or the choice of two outside braais. Crockery and cutlery is provided.
Comfortable Lounge with fire place.
Three Bedrooms (sleeps 6): one en-suite with king size bed and two with 2 single beds in each. Pillows are provided.
You must bring your own bedding.
Two Bathrooms, one with shower and one with shower and bath.
Loft area for additional accommodation if more than 6 people.
Covered stoep. Note: There is no electricity - a hot water donkey, paraffin lamps and candles are provided for the best ambience. Wood is provided.

Payment Policy:
A 50% non-refundable deposit is payable on confirmation of the reservation and the balance is payable one week before arrival.

Directions on How to Get There
From Bredasdorp:
Take the Arniston / Waenhuiskrans road towards Arniston. Follow this road for approximately 10 km.
Turn right, after Nacht Wacht Homestead on the left hand side, on to a gravel road. (Sign reads 'de Mond / Struisbaai / Agulhas') Follow this gravel road for 5km and pass through Prinskraal farmstead.
Soon after Prinskraal the Struisbaai road joins in from the right. Do not take this right turn. Follow straight on to de Mond. Approximately 5km further on from Prinskraal you will reach Vogelgezang farmstead on the right hand side.
From the farmhouse to the Cottage:
Exit the farmstead and carry on down the gravel road for a further 2 km. You will see the cottage gate on the right hand side. It is a farm gate with 'Vogelgezang' sign on the gate.
