Calitzdorp is connected to Oudtshoorn by the R52 and the route is made unique by the flocks of ostriches feeding in the lucerne fields. The district is notable for ostriches, lucerne, tobacco, grapes and other fruit. Calitzdorp is connected with the Cango Caves by way of an attractive scenic road through Coetzeespoort.

Die Poort Nature Reserve is an ideal retreat, of more than 1000ha, for peaceful and isolated tranquility in a magnificent mountain and river environment.
Die Poort is situated just outside Calitzdorp in the Little Karoo.
Accommodation:
There are four cottages able to accommodate sixteen guests. Mountain Rose Cottage: Self-catering three bedroom historic farm-house (with electricity); accommodates six people. Each bedroom has a door leading on to the porch, and a spectacular view. Tiny, fourth bedroom can be made available (possibly for children). An ideal holiday home for a family or a couple of friends. The main bedroom has an en suite bathroom with a shower and toilet. There are two more bathrooms (baths and toilets) in the house. The Barn: Self-catering, three bedroom, historic cottage (without electricity); accommodates four people. Each bedroom has a beautiful view of the mountains and fields, and the living area leads onto a porch. An ideal cottage for a couple or small family. The cottage has one bathroom with a shower and toilet. Even though there is no electricity at this stage, there are plenty of lamps and candles for light which creates a more rustic experience. Fig Tree Cottage Self-catering, one bedroom, historic cottage (without electricity); ideal for a romantic holiday. The cottage is bordered by a furrow fed by a mountain stream along which some old pepper trees provide shade on the veranda from where there is a beautiful view of the river and mountains. The cottage has one bathroom with a bath and toilet. There is also an outside room with bedroom (two beds) and bathroom. Even though there is no electricity at this stage, there are plenty of lamps and candles for light which creates a more rustic experience. Eagle's Nest Two cosy, historic cottages (without electricity), nestled on an outcrop at the foot of the Swartberg, with a view from the porch and bedrooms onto the Gamka River, which is a two-minute walk away. The two cottages are separated by a tiny garden: one cottage consists of a bedroom and full bathroom (shower and toilet), and the other contains a small bedroom and self-catering kitchen (including fireplace), stepping out onto a balcony. Even though there is no electricity at this stage, there are plenty of lamps and candles for light which creates a more rustic experience.
Facilities:
All cottages have self-catering kitchens with fireplaces. They all have an outside barbecue area, ideal for the warm summer and even mild winter nights of the Little Karoo. The cottages without electricity all have gas cookers and fridges. All the cottages have a parking area.

Attractions and Activities:
Among possible activities on the farm - in addition to just soaking up the atmosphere - are hiking, swimming, canoeing, mountain biking and bird watching (over 90 species personally recorded). There is also a nearby 4x4 route - BĂ´jaanskop.

The district offers visits to thermal springs, ostrich farms, the Cango Caves, Seweweeks Poort, Groenfontein-Kruis River Road, the Red Stone Hills, Gamkaberg Provincial Nature Reserve, Rooiberg Pass, Swartberg Pass and "The Hell." Another highlight is to try out some mouthwatering local cuisine at Rose of the Karoo Restaurant in Calitzdorp.
In 2003 part of the Landrover G4 Challenge was held on Die Poort Nature Reserve.
Directions:
Turn off (Matjiesvlei) at the eastern end of the Huisriver Pass (5km before Calitzdorp and some 40km from Ladismith) on narrow winding gravel road. At T-junction, after about 12km (don't turn left to Bennie Nel, Die Kom, after 6km), turn left, proceed along river for 4km; cross river over ford (drift), turn right at first road some 20 metres from ford (not stony track on river bank) and enter farm gate after 1km.

A 50% non-refundable deposit is payable on confirmation of the reservation and the balance is payable on arrival.
