From the summit of Viljoen's Pass the descent is gradual, through beautiful farmlands down to Elgin, a household name for apples and one of the most important transportation centres in South Africa. From here during the apple-picking season (January to May) the packhouses, employing the ultra modern electronic methods (grading by size and colour) grade and pack millions of apples which after being precooled are transported to Table Bay Harbour. Forty per cent of the country's apples come from Elgin.

Description :
Situated high in the mountains just off the Garden Route National Road, the Houw Hoek Inn is South Africa's oldest country inn and has been licensed since 1834. Well placed as a stop over to and from Cape Town and for tranquil weekend visits, the inn is surrounded by its own 35 acres of grounds which includes two swimming pools, tennis and squash court, volley ball, trampoline and putt putt.
The candlelit dining-room, which offers a la carte, has log fires in winter.
Dinner dances are held on Saturday nights and buffet lunch on Sundays.
The 49 en-suite rooms are equipped with TV sets and MNET(10 channels). The inn has well-equipped conference rooms and cater specially for weddings.

Most of the rooms have a fire place and a stoep.
