LITTLE LOTTA COTTAGE

In 1715 the first settler, Ferdinand Appel, obtained permission from the Landdrost of Stellenbosch to start gardening at what was then called Swartberg (after the mountain behind the town). In 1813 the place was renamed in honour of the Earl of Caledon (governor from 1807 to 1811). The town lies 38 kilometres from the coast and is famous for the chalybeate baths and the wild flower reserve. The baths have been used since the days of the Dutch Esta India Company. At the fountainhead there are six thermal springs with a temperature of 50 degrees celcius, and one cold spring.

Directions on How to Get There
From Cape Town take the second turn-off to Caledon. Turn left at stop (Nerina drive). Turn left into Ixia str. and left again into Crassula Street. Follow the turn and turn right into Disa Street, second on your right hand side.
