After Cape Town and Stellenbosch, Swellendam was the third settlement to be founded by the Dutch East India Company. The Drostdy was completed in 1747 and in the same year the new district was named Swellendam in honour of Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena ten Damme. Swellendam is a busy centre of a thriving agricultural region.

Mardouw offers an unsurpassed dining experience in both the romantic setting and the cuisine. Tappas is served on the verandah in the glow of the sunset and our gourmet four-course meals are enjoyed by candlelight under the stars. Our expert chef, recently returned from Belgium, has honed her skills, bringing new flair to Mardouw’s fare. At its heart is the freshest of ingredients and imaginative preparation. Accommodation : The Superior Suite offers ultimate luxury and privacy, in an ambience of vibrant colour and African eclecticism. Sumptuous reds set off the quieter tones of African artefacts, and compliment the warmth of the fireplace in winter. The suite comprises lounge, dining area, inviting bedroom and bathroom, with separate toilet, and its special features, such as double handcrafted stone sinks and salt box. Private verandah and own entrance for your ultimate seclusion. This suite is on the ground floor and has direct access to the pool. The Superior Suite offers the ultimate in luxury and privacy with its own lounge and dining area where guests may enjoy sumptuously prepared meals in the privacy of their own space. A private verandah leads to the sparkling designer infi nity pool whilst the seductive reds of its eclectic African décor set off some quieter neutral tones and compliment the warmth of the fireplace. The De Luxe Suite suggests cool contemplation in its muted flow of soothing sandstone and green, the colours of the veld. This haven of tranquillity has its own lounge, fireplace with stone surround (complete with fossilised moss), and private view of the garden. Glimpses of the mountains beyond merge with the sense of nature indoors. Private verandah and direct access to the pool from this de luxe ground floor suite. This suite is wheelchair friendly. Inspired by the veld, the De Luxe Suite epitomizes serenity in soothing tints of sandstone and green. This haven of tranquillity also has its own private lounge, sporting the farmhouse’s original stone-surround fi replace, and a spectacular collection of artwork by South Africa’s famous Frans Claerhout. This suite also has direct access to the pool and is wheelchair friendly. The three Upstairs Rooms, consisting of two double rooms and one twin room, each have their own private balcony complete with breathtaking panoramic views of the Langeberg Mountains. Enhanced with a selection of modern art works, the décor in these rooms is plush and exclusive with the finest fittings echoing the muted natural shades of olive green, stone and eggshell. All Suites and Rooms are equipped with mini-bars, electronic safes, hi-fi’s and DVD’s, satellite television, hair-dryers, coffee/tea facilities, towelling robes, slippers, telephone and internet access facilities. Directions on How to Get There
From Cape Town on the N1 to Worcester, follow the R60 Robertson through to Ashton, drive through Ashton and take the R60 Swellendam turnoff to the right. Mardouw is 20kms on the left hand side.
From Cape Town on the N2 – approximately 20kms past Riviersonderend is the town of STORMSVLEI. Turn LEFT at the sign post Stormsvlei / Bonnievale onto the R317. Drive for 16 kms until the sign post Gelukshoop Pad / Drew, turn RIGHT. Continue for another 15kms then turn LEFT at the sign post Drew / Swellendam, cross the bridge over the Breede River and continue straight until you reach a T-junction indicating R60 Ashton / Swellendam. Turn LEFT onto the R60 towards ASHTON, +- 2,5 kms turn RIGHT at the Mardouw pillar.
From George / Knysna – follow the N2 past the Swellendam turnoff and take the R60 Ashton / Worcester turnoff to the right. Straight over the 4-way stop and continue along the R60 for approximately 28 kms. Turn RIGHT at the Mardouw pillar.
