OLD THATCH LODGE
Type : Bed and Breakfast Accommodation Location : Swellendam
After Cape Town and Stellenbosch, Swellendam was the third settlement to be founded by the Dutch East India Company. The Drostdy was completed in 1747 and in the same year the new district was named Swellendam in honour of Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena ten Damme. Swellendam is a busy centre of a thriving agricultural region.
Description : We invite you to sleep in a National Monument. Have a rest in our wonderful native garden, or go with us on a tour around Swellendam; third oldest town in South Africa and approximately 220 km from Cape Town.
Our house, built in Cape Victorian style, was the townhouse from Mr. Reitz, the governor of the Cape in the early 1900s. The Reitz family lived on a farm and only came to town on special occasions and church days, where they lived for a few days in "our" house. That was long ago, but the atmosphere is still as it was in the old days.
Enjoy the evening in our beautiful lounge with an open fireplace.
Your breakfast will be served outside on the terrace under the thatch roof. Things to do : You can even cook your own meal in our Lodge kitchen, or have a nice braai in our wonderful garden. We can also offer you day tours in an air conditioned Minibus around Swellendam. Please don't hesitate to ask us.
