De Hoop Nature Reserve lies as an enclave between the coast and the intensively cultivated wheat-lands of the south-western Cape. The reserve is a unique sanctuary incorporating 40 kilometres of coastline, duneveld and De Hoop Vlei, a landlocked freshwater lake (fed by rivulets and springs) 14 kilometres long and averaging half a kilometre in width.
Description : The Potteberg Guest Farm is situated at the foot of the Potberg Mountain, on the boundary of De Hoop Nature Reserve. A self-catering flat with private entrance and lovely en-suite double room. Linen and towels provided. Kitchen fully equipped , but delicious farm style meals served on request. Braai facilities with wood provided.
The farmhouse is surrounded by a beautiful garden. We farm with wheat, sheep, ostrich and a dairy. A highlight for our guests is a tour of the farm in Niel's bakkie. See Eland and large flocks of Blue crane or a Cape Griffen Vulture soaring overhead.
Attractions & Activities : The farm is the ideal base from which to explore the De Hoop Reserve and to participate in local activities, such as, whale watching (May to November), mountain biking, hiking, snorkeling, game viewing and bird watching.
We have recently added a bird hide; giving our guests a chance to enjoy the birdlife up close.
Look out for sightings of Cape Griffon Vultures, Blue Crane and the Cape Augulhas Clapper Lark, amongst others.
The road south from Bredasdorp takes one to the historic village of Kassiesbaai at Arniston / Waenhuiskrans and further to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet.
On the road to the east, one crosses the Breede River at Malagas, on the last remaining manually operated pont in South Africa. The road south takes one to Witsand at the mouth of the Breede River and the road north leads to the historic town of Swellendam.
