After Cape Town and Stellenbosch, Swellendam was the third settlement to be founded by the Dutch East India Company. The Drostdy was completed in 1747 and in the same year the new district was named Swellendam in honour of Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena ten Damme. Swellendam is a busy centre of a thriving agricultural region.

Swellendam is a charming village situated at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, famous not only for its "braambessies", but also for its eclectic architecture, fascinating past and great outdoor life.
Geographically, Swellendam is well situated on the N2 - halfway between Cape Town and George. Swellendam offers enchanting surroundings, flora and fauna, nature reserve, national park, sport and recreation, hiking trails and best of all relaxation and tranquillity. There must be few towns in the world where so many picturesque buildings nestle under a mountain backdrop of such grandeur.
Here, in the third oldest town in South Africa, you will find Purper Winde on the banks of the Koornlands River - an excellent wedding and honneymoon venue.

Turn left at the third turn off to Swellendam (pass the Ashton turn off; pass thr Railton turn off; take the next turn off) Travel down Swellengrebel Street. Turn right into Faure Street. Purper Winde is on the left side at number 33.
