Our Visitor's Remarks :
Staandakkie in itself is unremarkable. It is small. It is comfortable. It is quiet. It is a single room with a kitchenette and en-suite bathroom. It has views of the farm, and stands apart ten paces from the back of the farmhouse (in fact, it is the original farmhouse). Yet I am amazed at what the advertisements leave out. In one direction, one finds a derelict farmhouse and a long walk through fynbos to the top of a hill. In another direction, there is the dairy - a far bigger operation than I had anticipated. In another direction, there is a salt pan - and the neighbours, who farm with ostriches and emus, and gladly showed me the inner workings of their fascinating trade. In the other direction, there are gnarled trees and magnificently coloured dragonflies (I obtained some stunning photos). I was surprised to find myself face to face with big game on the farm, and the bird life was amazing. Not least, there is the friendly farmer's wife, who every day brought me fresh milk, or tomatoes, or rusks, or cake. Her stock phrase was: "It's the beeegest pleaszhaaa!" Not least, this was a very economical stay. For a fortnight's visit, I paid less than I have anywhere else.
