The Overberg
Come, wander through the Overberg with us. Join us on an imaginary round trip commencing at Pringle Bay and journeying along the coast visiting all of the coastal towns such as Betty's Bay with its African Penguin colony and botanical gardens, through Kleinmond, Onrus River to Hermanus, the Riviera of the Overberg, where the whales wallow and splash in the water just a stones throw away from fascinated viewers. When in the village of Stanford enjoy architecture of a bygone era, then take a river boat ride down the Klein River. On to Gansbaai where adventure seekers may take a dive with the Great White sharks, before turning inland, to enjoy the splendour of our countryside visiting towns and villages en route such as Napier where each year the locals celebrate their history by holding a horse and cart festival. A short trip from Napier is the Moravian Church town of Elim, steeped in history and tradition with its beautiful thatched cottages and unusual church building. Deviate a while and move back to the coast through Bredasdorp, with its unique shipwreck museum, to Cape Agulhas the southernmost tip of Africa. Take an exciting Quad bike ride and see the countryside from a different perspective. Travel back through Struisbaai and on to Arniston, a worldwide acclaimed hideaway. Back inland and on to De Hoop Nature Reserve, home of the endangered Cape Vulture. Visit the only manually operated pontoon in South Africa at Malagas and enjoy the hospitality at the local guest house. Cross the Breede River and down to Witsand with its wide open beaches at St Sebastian Bay. The road back inland will take the traveler through Buffeljagsrivier, where adventurous types may enjoy an enormous fuffi-slide. Before going on to the historical town of Swellendam and its varied architecture, take a trip up through the Tradoux pass to Barrydale, wine and fruit growing centre. Returning to Cape Town via the N2 the visitor will travel through the towns of Riviersonderend and Caledon, where there is a casino. A final deviation takes one to the villages of Greyton and Ganadendal then on to the fruit growing towns of, Villiersdorp, where the seventh largest dam in South Africa, Theewaterskloof is to be found and Grabouw. The traveler will of course choose his or her own route and stay, in accordance with personal taste. We on the other hand will show you the way and tell you about some of the wonders and history that may excite you into exploring on your own. Should you wander this way during the months May to November you will undoubtedly experience the thrill of seeing our Southern Right Whales wallowing in the various bays along the way. If you are made of tougher stuff the Great White Sharks off the Gansbaai coast may be for you. Indeed, the entire region is a paradise for the nature lover. Boasting a fully fledged botanical garden, nature reserve and two national parks, as well as the seventh largest dam in South Africa, the Overberg offers the visitor a feast of natural delights. There are eco tour operators qualified to open up the exciting delights of the area to you from fishing trips to bird watching excursions. There are hiking trails that take you amongst the splendour of the Protea floral kingdom (Fynbos); sporting activities such as para-gliding, fishing, water sport, and more. It soon becomes evident that the Overberg is worth serious consideration as your next holiday destination. When visiting in this region you are bound to find the hospitality of the locals to be warm and friendly. There are many fine accommodation establishments to choose from. These range from hotels and guest houses that offer full board, to bed and breakfast and self-catering units. In addition there are a number of working farms that offer accommodation with the well known hospitality of the region.
