Die Poort Private Nature Reserve is an ideal 1250 ha retreat, for peaceful and isolated tranquility in a magnificent mountain and river environment. It borders onto the Greater Swartberg Protected Area (a World Heritage Site) and is situated within three international biodiversity hot spots, the Succulent Karoo, the Cape Floristic Region and Thicket. The farm overlooks and includes the Gamka River where it leaves the Swartberg Mountain after its journey of 23 km through Gamkapoort, the last 5 km of which fall within the boundaries of Die Poort. We are the southern neighbours of Gamkaskloof, also known as ‘Die Hel’ (The Hell), although separated by a tough 14 km hike.
In addition to the main house, there are 3 historic, self-catering guest cottages, resembling the type of dwellings in Gamkaskloof. Each has its own charm and beautiful view of the wonderful surrounding mountains and river. Step back in time to the simpler way of life and unwind from the busy city life. It is an experience you will long remember.
The Barn : Two bedrooms (each containing two single beds), a bathroom with a shower and toilet and a large kitchen which leads onto an open porch with barbeque facilities. Bed linen and towels supplied. A warm water geyser is served by gas and solar panels as well as a fridge and hot-plate served by gas; light is provided by solar lamps. The cottage borders onto a historic furrow, constructed in 1870 and fed by a mountain stream to serve irrigation on Die Poort and a neighbouring farm.
Fig Tree : Restored cottage, originally built as a pioneer dwelling in 1915. It has a bedroom with a double bed, kitchen and bathroom with bath and toilet and there is an outdoor shower. A warm water geyser is served by gas and solar panels as well as a fridge, hot-plate and oven served by gas; light is provided by solar lamps.
A separate adjacent building contains a bedroom with 2 single beds and an en-suite bathroom with shower and toilet. Bed linen and towels supplied. Both buildings are north-facing and also border on the historic furrow, along which some old pepper trees provide shade on the veranda and a barbecue area. From everywhere there is a superb view of the river and mountains.
Eagle’s Nest : Restored pioneer cottage, dated 1881, closest to the river, nestled on an outcrop at the foot of the Swartberg, with a stunning north facing view of the nearby river and mountains. Bed linen and towels supplied. A warm water geyser as well as a fridge and hot-plate is served by gas; light is provided by solar lamps.
The cottage consists of two bedrooms, one also serving as a lounge, containing two double beds and one single bed, a bathroom (shower and toilet) and a kitchen, stepping out onto a large veranda with outside barbecue area.
Please note: in order to reach Eagle’s Nest you need a bakkie or vehicle with reasonable ground clearance to travel over two short drifts.
Die Poort is situated in the northern part of Matjiesvlei, at the end of a scenic cul-de-sac gravel road, 17 km from Calitzdorp (12km from the R62 where the turnoff to Matjiesvlei is situated 5 km west of Calitzdorp at the foot of the Huis River Pass).
