The fishermen’s cottages roofed with straw, gave Struisbaai its name. Three of these cottages have been restored as National Monuments at ‘Hotagterklip’ and serve as a reminder of a time gone by. The handsome bay has been formed by an eleven kilometer curve in the coastline where fishermen, bathers and sun-seekers are attracted.
Each year in mid-summer (end December), the Trans Agulhas boat race takes place and draws large crowds of excited spectators. Another event which takes place annually and also attracts large crowds is the Struisbaai Geelstertfees.
