North West Province – The picturesque Magaliesberg will be in the limelight this coming weekend as eager mountain bikers and trail runners line up to participate in two prestigious off-road events, the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic (Saturday, 03 June 2017) and the FNB Platinum Trail Run (Sunday, 04 June 2017) at the ATKV (Buffelspoort).
According to Harry Schubert, Course Designer, the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic is a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty and drama of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. “The popularity of the event continues to exceed expectations from year to year,” continues Schubert. “The route designers are constantly challenged to ensure that the riders experience the best of what the Monster has to offer. The Magalies Monster (the +- 65km race) is one of the toughest and most demanding one-day events in the country. Mountain bikers taking part in the +- 65km event for the first time must be well prepared and make sure that they pace themselves. Just a heads up, the downhills are as technical as the up hills.”
“On Sunday the runners will have a bit more time than the cyclists to absorb the unique scenic surroundings of the Magaliesberg,” continues Schubert. “Running adds a different perspective to the experience of being out in the mountains. The longer 24km distance is regarded as one of the toughest, but most enjoyable trail running events in the country. The stunning views and scenery from the top of the mountain will make all the exertion worthwhile. Runners must remember to focus on hydration as the daytime temperatures can increase during the course of the event. This applies especially for the 24km route.”
